Tim Atkin's Argentina Special Report 2026 is out — and after a one-year absence, a perfect 100-point score is back for an Argentine wine.Once a year, the Argentine wine world holds its breath. Tim Atkin MW — the British Master of Wine who has spent decades visiting Mendoza's vineyards, walking high-altitude rows in Salta, and tasting across Argentina's most remote wine regions — releases his annual Special Report. And the scores he awards can shift a winery's international reputation overnight. The Argentina 2026 Special Report is now out, and it marks the return of the perfect score: after topping out at 99 points in 2025, Atkin has once again awarded 100 points to an Argentine wine. Of the 1,615 wines he tasted from 261 producers, only one reached perfection — while three scored 99 and five scored 98. The depth of quality in those top tiers makes it clear that Argentina is no longer producing wines that surprise the world — it's producing wines that lead it.Here's a complete breakdown of everything that matters in this year's report.
A Perfect 100 Points — The Only One Among 1,615 Wines
The headline is the Per Se Uní del Bonnesant Monte Alabanza 2024, from Gualtallary in Mendoza's Valle de Uco. Tim Atkin awarded it 100 points — a perfect score. Only 384 bottles of this vintage were ever released. It is, by any measure, one of the most extraordinary Argentine wines ever produced. It's not Atkin's first perfect score for Argentina — previous 100-pointers include Zuccardi Finca Piedra Infinita Gravascal 2019 (2022 report) and two wines in 2023: Per Se La Craie 2021 and Altos Las Hormigas Jardín de Hormigas Los Amantes 2021. But after no 100-point wines in 2025, this year's score marks the return of perfection — and a second 100 for the Per Se team of David Bonomi and Edy del Popolo.

At the 99-point level, three wines made the cut: Noemía 2022 from Patagonia, Cheval des Andes 2023 from Mendoza, and La Craie Monte Alabanza 2024, also from Gualtallary. The 98-point tier spans the country's finest terroirs:Jardín de Hormigas Los Amantes 2024 — Altos Las Hormigas, Mendoza Adrianna Vineyard Mundus Bacillus Terrae 2023 — Catena Zapata, Gualtallary Alto Los Cuises Malbec 2024 — El Porvenir de Cafayate, Salta Monasterio 2023 — Raquis, San Pablo Piedra Infinita Supercal Malbec 2023 — Zuccardi Valle de Uco The presence of El Porvenir de Cafayate's Salta Malbec in this tier is a signal: Argentina's high-altitude north is no longer a footnote. It's competing at the very top of the game.
The Winery of the Year: Bodegas Salentein
Atkin named Bodegas Salentein as Winery of the Year — a recognition that puts one of Valle de Uco's landmark estates firmly in the global spotlight. Salentein has long been known for its stunning architecture and serious wines; this award cements its place among Argentina's elite producers.

Winemaker of the Year: Pablo Cúneo (Luigi Bosca)
The Winemaker of the Year honor went to Pablo Cúneo, director of winemaking at Luigi Bosca, who has led the bodega's transformation over nearly three decades. Atkin's words on the award were direct: "The hardest thing in a winery is to take something already successful and make it better — and I think he's done it. He's an inspiring figure, leads a great team, and is a brilliant winemaker."

The Full Podium — People and Institutions of the Year
Beyond the scores, Atkin's annual podium recognizes the personalities shaping Argentine wine culture:Winemaker of the Year: Pablo Cúneo (Luigi Bosca) Winery of the Year: Bodegas Salentein Young Winemaker of the Year: Laura Principiano (Zuccardi Valle de Uco) Legend of Winemaking: Santiago Achával (Matervini) Viticulturist of the Year: Facundo Impagliazzo (Raquis) Rising Star of the Year: Santiago Vignoni (Macollo Wines) Restaurant of the Year: Azafrán, Mendoza Sommelier of the Year: Martín Bruno (Don Julio) Wine Tourism Award: Casa Vigil / El Enemigo, Mendoza
Experience Mendoza's Award-Winning Wineries Firsthand
The wineries in this report — Salentein, Zuccardi, Catena Zapata, Altos Las Hormigas — all open their cellar doors to visitors. Atkin rarely flags this grape unless the execution is exceptional — and the Calchaquí Valleys, at over 2,000 meters above sea level, produce some of the most aromatic examples in the world.Beyond highlighting high-scoring wines, Tim Atkin's report underscores how flavor profiles are evolving. Tim Atkin Argentina Report 2026: Top-Rated Wines

Argentine wine has never been stronger. The 2023 and 2024 vintages — now hitting shelves internationally — are among the best in recent memory for Mendoza's Uco Valley. This guide covers the best Argentine wines of 2026: what to buy, where to find them in the US, and how to experience them in person.
Why Argentine Wine Stands Apart
Argentine wine's secret weapon is altitude. Mendoza's top vineyards are planted between 900 and 1,200 meters above sea level — far higher than most of the world's great wine regions. The result: intense UV exposure that thickens grape skins and deepens color, dramatic day-to-night temperature swings that preserve natural acidity and aromatic complexity, and a dry climate that virtually eliminates fungal disease. No other country combines these conditions at this scale. And no other country produces Malbec like Argentina does.
The Best Argentine Malbec of 2026
Malbec is Argentina's signature grape, and 2026 is one of its finest expressions yet. Here are the bottles that define the category this year.
Zuccardi Serie A Malbec 2024 (~$17)
Zuccardi is the most respected name in Uco Valley — and the Serie A is where their winemaking philosophy meets everyday accessibility. The 2024 vintage brings bright red fruit, violet notes, and a clean mineral finish that speaks directly to Altamira's rocky soils. Rated 92 by James Suckling and 91 by Robert Parker, this is the bottle that converts Malbec skeptics.Shop Zuccardi Serie A on Wine.com
Crios de Susana Balbo Malbec 2023 (~$15)
Made by one of Argentina's most celebrated winemakers, Crios is the perfect entry point into serious Argentine Malbec. Sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the heart of Mendoza, this is Cabernet Franc at its most precise: dried herbs, red currant, graphite, and a floral lift that lingers long after the glass is empty. Elegant, structured, and unmistakably Argentine.Shop Zuccardi Cabernet Franc on Wine.com If Malbec is Argentina's king, Cabernet Franc is quietly becoming its crown prince. In the Cafayate Valley of Salta, at over 1,700 meters above sea level, it produces wines of extraordinary aromatic intensity: rose petals, white peach, and jasmine, balanced by a dry, crisp palate that surprises first-time drinkers who expect sweetness from the nose.
Susana Balbo Barrel Fermented Torrontés 2023 (~$26)
The most ambitious Torrontés on the market — barrel fermented, which adds a creamy texture and subtle oak complexity that no other producer attempts with this grape. Rose petals, white peach, and ginger on the nose, with a rich, structured palate that pairs beautifully with grilled fish or spiced cuisines. Rated 94 by James Suckling, 93 by Vinous. The Best Argentine Wines of 2026: A Complete Guide

Argentina's wine story doesn't end in Mendoza. Head south to Patagonia or north to the Andean highlands of Salta and Jujuy, and you'll discover two of the most exciting — and contrasting — wine frontiers on Earth. This guide breaks down the producers, the grapes, and the terroir that make each region unique.
Argentina's Wine Map Is Bigger Than You Think
When most wine lovers think of Argentine wine, Mendoza comes to mind first — and for good reason. It's the engine of the country's wine industry, responsible for the majority of its exports and the global rise of Malbec. But limiting Argentina to Mendoza alone is like limiting France to Bordeaux. To the south, Patagonia stretches into wind-battered latitudes where vines struggle — and thrive — under extreme conditions. To the north, the high-altitude valleys of Salta, Jujuy, and Catamarca produce wines of almost otherworldly intensity at elevations that leave visitors breathless. And between them, Mendoza holds its classic ground. These are not interchangeable. They are three distinct wine philosophies shaped by geography, climate, and the producers brave enough to farm them.
Patagonia: Argentina's Cool-Climate Frontier
Where It Is and Why It Matters Patagonia's wine country lies roughly between 38° and 46° south latitude — among the southernmost wine-producing zones on the planet. The main regions are Neuquén (centered around San Patricio del Chañar), Río Negro (the Alto Valle), and the emerging frontier of Chubut, home to some of the world's most southerly commercial vineyards. What defines Patagonia is not altitude — the vineyards here sit at relatively modest elevations — but latitude and climate. Long summer days with intense ultraviolet radiation. Cold nights that preserve natural acidity. And the wind. Always the wind. The Patagonian Wind: A Winemaker's Challenge and Secret Weapon The zonda and Patagonian winds are constant, powerful, and relentless. For farmers, this is both curse and gift. On one hand, wind stress forces the vine to work harder, producing smaller berries with thicker skins. Thicker skins mean more color, more tannin, more polyphenols — complexity without the need for extreme heat. On the other hand, excessive wind can damage flowering and reduce yields dramatically. The result is wines of surprising structure and elegance at moderate alcohol levels — typically 13–14% ABV — compared to the richer, warmer-climate styles of Mendoza. The Star Grapes of Patagonia Pinot Noir is Patagonia's crown jewel. In regions like Río Negro, it achieves a transparency and aromatic finesse that draws comparisons to Burgundy or Oregon's Willamette Valley. Cool nights slow ripening, developing red cherry, pomegranate, and dried rose petal notes with vibrant acidity that makes the wines genuinely age-worthy. Malbec takes on a different personality here. Cooler conditions produce a more floral, firm, and structured expression — less about plush velvet, more about silk and precision. If Mendoza Malbec is a rich opera, Patagonian Malbec is chamber music. Merlot finds an elegant balance in Patagonia that can be elusive elsewhere. The moderate climate prevents over-ripening, keeping the grape fresh and structured.Whites are a growing strength: Chardonnay with bright citrus and mineral tension, Sauvignon Blanc with green herb and grapefruit precision, and — uniquely — old-vine Semillón in Río Negro, one of Argentina's most underappreciated white varieties.
Top Producers to Know
Bodega Chacra (Río Negro) — Founded with biodynamic principles and old Pinot Noir vines planted in 1932 and 1955, Chacra produces some of the most sought-after Patagonian wines internationally. Their Cincuenta y Cinco and Treinta y Dos are benchmark expressions of Argentine Pinot Noir. Noemía (Río Negro) — Born from a partnership between Danish collector Hans Vinding-Diers and Countess Noemi Marone Cinzano, this tiny estate focuses on old-vine Malbec from Río Negro. The wines are precise, mineral, and nothing like what most people expect from the grape.Familia Schroeder (Neuquén) — One of the pioneering estates of San Patricio del Chañar, producing a full range from accessible everyday wines to serious reserves, with strong Pinot Noir and Malbec expressions. Bodega del Fin del Mundo (Neuquén) — The name means "Winery at the End of the World," and it delivers on the promise. A large, modern producer making consistent, internationally focused wines across multiple varieties. Otronia (Chubut) — Located in the 45th parallel south, this estate pushes the boundaries of where wine can be made. Their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from Sarmiento are genuine pioneers of the "extreme south." Casa Yagüe (Trevelin, Chubut) — A small family winery in the foothills of the Andes near the Chilean border, producing vibrant whites and Pinot Noir at the edge of viticultural possibility.🍷 Ready to explore Patagonia's vineyards in person? Sitting between 32° and 35° south latitude at the foot of the Andes, it combines altitude (most vineyards sit between 700m and 1,200m), desert climate, and Andean snowmelt irrigation to produce wines of concentration, power, and warmth. The amplitude between day and night temperatures — often 15–20°C — preserves aromatics while allowing full phenolic ripeness. The result is the classic Argentine profile: generous dark fruit, velvety tannins, and impressive structure.
Mendoza's Key Sub-Regions
Luján de Cuyo: The historical heartland of Argentine Malbec, with gravelly soils and established old vines. Valle de Uco: The rising star — higher elevations (up to 1,500m), cooler temperatures, and soils rich in limestone and alluvial deposits. Sub-zones like Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira are producing some of Argentina's most exciting wines. Maipú: Warm and productive, home to many classic Malbec producers.Elevations range from 1,700m to over 3,300m above sea level — the highest in the world for commercial wine production.🍷 Planning a trip to Mendoza? This extreme thermic amplitude forces grapes to develop extraordinarily thick skins packed with pigments, aromatics, and protective compounds. The resulting wines are deeply colored, aromatically explosive, and high in natural acidity despite the heat of the day. They can be simultaneously powerful and fresh — a paradox that confounds expectations.
The Star Grapes of the NOA
Torrontés is Argentina's most distinctive white grape, and Cafayate is its spiritual home. At altitude, it produces a wine of exceptional aromatic intensity — jasmine, white peach, rose petal, and apricot — with a crisp, dry finish that surprises those expecting sweetness. It's one of South America's great original white wines. Malbec at altitude in Salta is a different beast entirely. Smaller berries, more concentrated color, wilder aromatics — spice, violet, dark fruit, and an almost ink-like depth. Producers like Clos de los Siete and Achaval Ferrer have shown the world what high-altitude Malbec can do. Cabernet Sauvignon also performs well at altitude, producing structured, herbaceous wines with dark fruit and firm tannins.
Top Producers to Know
Bodega Colomé (Salta) — Swiss hotelier Donald Hess purchased this historic estate in the Calchaquí Valleys, home to vines planted in the 1800s at over 2,000m. Their Altura Máxima Malbec, from the highest vineyard at 3,111m, is a collectors' wine of global stature. El Esteco (Cafayate) — One of the oldest and most respected wineries in the north, producing a wide range including benchmark Torrontés and structured reds. Bodega Clos de los Siete (Mendoza/Uco, with high-altitude philosophy) — While based in Mendoza, the project brings together several French investors and embodies the altitude-driven philosophy of modern Argentine winemaking. Tacuil (Salta) — A tiny, artisanal producer at 2,000m+ in the Calchaquí Valleys, making just a few thousand bottles per year of some of the most mineral and intense wines in Argentina. Amalaya (Salta) — The accessible face of Colomé, offering approachable, beautifully made wines at reasonable prices for the international market.🍷 Curious about Argentina's high-altitude wine country? Chacra's Cincuenta y Cinco will change how you think about Argentine wine. If you're a Malbec devotee, Mendoza is your foundation — then graduate to a Valle de Uco or a Noemía from Río Negro for contrast. If you crave something totally unlike anything else, seek out a Torrontés from Cafayate or a Colomé Altura Máxima. These wines don't exist anywhere else on Earth.
 Final Thoughts
Argentina's wine country is one of the most geographically dramatic in the world. From the windswept southern latitudes of Patagonia to the thin-aired Andean peaks of Salta, the country offers a spectrum of styles, grapes, and terroirs that rival the diversity of any major wine nation. The global wine conversation is just beginning to catch up. The producers listed in this guide are not emerging curiosities — they are serious, internationally acclaimed estates making wines that deserve a place on any serious wine list. The question isn't whether to explore Argentine wine beyond Mendoza. Beyond Mendoza: Patagonia's Cool-Climate Wines, Top Producers, and How It Compares to Mendoza and Argentina's High-Altitude North

purple-petaled flowers near mountain during daytime

For decades, the word "Argentina" on a wine label was synonymous with one thing: Malbec.
Bold, fruity, and reliable. But in the high-altitude corners of the Uco Valley, a revolution has been quietly fermenting. Today, the most exciting bottles coming out of the Andes aren't just Malbec — they are Cabernet Franc. Known as the "architect" behind some of the world's most expensive blends, this grape has found a new, wilder expression in Argentina's rocky soils. If you're looking for elegance, freshness, and a story that goes beyond the expected, it's time to discover why the world's top sommeliers have their eyes fixed on the Argentine Franc.
The New Argentina: A Quiet Revolution at Altitude
Argentina built its international reputation on Malbec — and rightly so. But reputation can become a ceiling. For a generation of Argentine winemakers now working at 1,300 to 1,500 meters above sea level in the Uco Valley, the question was never how to make better Malbec. It was what else these extraordinary soils could do. The answer, increasingly, is Cabernet Franc. Cabernet Franc, once an understated variety, now commands the spotlight in Argentina's higher regions. As renowned sommelier and Decanter World Wine Awards Regional Chair for Argentina Paz Levinson puts it: "Argentina is showing this grape like no other country does." Decanter This is not a trend born in a marketing meeting. It emerged from the vineyards themselves — from the peculiar combination of volcanic and calcareous soils, dramatic diurnal temperature swings, and intense Andean UV radiation that defines the Uco Valley's high-altitude terroirs. A grape that in France leans toward soft, dark fruit and tobacco suddenly becomes something sharper, more aromatic, and more mineral. Something that drinks like a conversation with the mountains.
The Terroir Secret: Why Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira Are Changing Everything
If you want to understand Argentina's Cabernet Franc revolution, you need to understand two places: Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira — two subzones within the Uco Valley that are rewriting the global wine map. Gualtallary, sitting at altitudes between 1,200 and 1,550 meters, is perhaps the more dramatic story. Initially planted in 1992 for sparkling wine, it was thought back then to be far too cool for reds. Today, it is evidently a place to watch for top-rank reds. The soils here are predominantly calcareous — full of calcium carbonate — which lends wines a striking mineral tension and a long, saline finish that critics consistently describe as reminiscent of high-end Burgundy or the Loire Valley's finest Chinons. Decanter Paraje Altamira, further south in the Uco Valley, brings a different signature: ancient alluvial deposits with significant limestone and reddish clay. The wines here tend to be slightly fuller, with more structured tannins and dark fruit notes underscored by that characteristic herbal lift. What both terroirs share is the essential element of Cabernet Franc's success in Argentina: cold nights. The Uco Valley can swing 15°C to 20°C between day and night temperatures. This slows ripening dramatically, preserving the grape's natural acidity and its aromatic compounds — the violets, cassis, mountain herbs, and graphite minerality that make Argentine Cabernet Franc so distinctive. There is, as one Robert Parker critic noted of the Gran Enemigo Gualtallary, "no better example of Cabernet Franc's suitability in the Uco Valley — a match rendered with incomparable finesse, depth and complexity." LCBO The comparison to Bordeaux and the Loire Valley is flattering but incomplete. Argentine Cabernet Franc is not an imitation of anything European. It is its own thing: wilder, more perfumed, with a mountain energy that Old World versions simply cannot replicate.
The Food-Friendly Factor: Perfect for the Modern US Palate
There's another reason American wine lovers should pay attention: Cabernet Franc from the Uco Valley is extraordinarily food-friendly. The modern US wine palate has been moving away from the extracted, high-alcohol, heavily oaked style that defined the 1990s and early 2000s. Today's drinker — especially in major metro markets and among younger consumers — leans toward freshness, balance, and food compatibility. Argentine Cabernet Franc delivers all three. Compared to Malbec, it typically has:Higher natural acidity — which makes it cleaner on the palate and more refreshing with food. Lighter body — it rarely exceeds 14% alcohol when made at altitude. More complex aromatics — violets, red currant, fresh herbs, graphite, sometimes a haunting floral note of lavender. Finer tannins — silky rather than grippy, with a chalky mineral edge on the finish. The result is a wine that works beautifully across a wide range of dishes. Classic pairings include roasted lamb (a natural with the herbal notes), mushroom risotto, duck confit, aged cheeses, and even salmon with a rich sauce. But the real versatility is at the table: Argentine Cabernet Franc has the structure to cut through rich food and the elegance to complement lighter dishes without overwhelming them. Sommelier educators in the US have started featuring it prominently in comparative tastings — not as a novelty, but as a serious benchmark for what high-altitude cool-climate reds can achieve outside of Europe.
Top Producers to Watch
The roster of serious Cabernet Franc producers in Argentina has grown significantly over the past decade, but a few names stand out as essential reference points for anyone building their understanding of the category. El Enemigo / Gran Enemigo (Bodega Aleanna) The origin story of Argentina's Cabernet Franc moment starts here. El Enemigo is a joint venture by Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil, chief winemaker at Bodega Catena Zapata since 2002. The pair created El Enemigo and Bodega Aleanna in 2007, quickly garnering critical acclaim for their Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Cabernet Franc. Wine-Searcher The range operates on two levels. The entry-level El Enemigo Cabernet Franc — 90% Cabernet Franc and 10% Malbec from vineyards at around 4,700 feet of elevation in Gualtallary, spending 16 months in French oak — retails around $28-$30 and regularly scores 93-95 points across major publications. It's the definition of a great introduction. Then there is the Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Single Vineyard: one of the most celebrated bottles in all of South America, rated up to 98 points by Robert Parker, which currently retails around $110-$120. Reverse Wine Snob Zuccardi Valle de Uco If one winery embodies the intellectual ambition of Argentine winemaking, it is Zuccardi. Their approach — mapping individual plots by soil composition, altitude, and microclimate — has produced some of the deepest expressions of Uco Valley terroir available anywhere. Their Cabernet Franc, often blended into single-vineyard expressions, shows the austere, mineral side of the grape. Watch the Piedra Infinita and Supercal lines closely. Rutini Wines A Mendoza institution with over a century of history, Rutini has embraced the cool-climate revolution with conviction. Their premium offerings from the Uco Valley show a more polished, accessible style — a good entry point for consumers transitioning from New World Cabernet Sauvignon. Achaval Ferrer / Alma Negra Known primarily for their Malbec single vineyards, both producers have been quietly producing Cabernet Franc that deserves attention. Look for bottles from Paraje Altamira for the most mineral, structured expressions. Durigutti Héctor and Pablo Durigutti are among the most respected names in Argentine winemaking. Their unoaked Cabernet Franc from Las Compuertas in Luján de Cuyo — violet red in color with lively red fruit and hints of fresh herbs — is taut in the mouth with firm tannins. A different style from the Uco Valley leaders, but a fascinating counterpoint. Decanter
The Price-to-Value Ratio: The Argument You Need to Make to Every American Wine Buyer
Here is the number that changes the conversation. A great Argentine Cabernet Franc — critically acclaimed, terroir-expressive, cellar-worthy — typically retails between $25 and $50. The entry-level El Enemigo hovers around $28-$30. A highly-rated bottle from Zuccardi or Rutini can usually be found for $35-$55. Even the benchmark Gran Enemigo single-vineyard expressions, regularly scoring 94-97 points, land under $125. For comparison, a Loire Valley Chinon or Bourgueil of equivalent critical standing costs $40-$80. A Napa Valley Cabernet Franc from a recognized producer starts at $80 and climbs quickly past $200. And Bordeaux? The blends in which Cabernet Franc plays a starring role (Saint-Émilion, Pomerol) rarely begin below $50 for modest quality, and rapidly escalate into the hundreds. As Paz Levinson confirms: "Argentinian wines are not the cheapest and not the most expensive, but they have a very good quality-to-price relationship." That understates the reality for Cabernet Franc specifically. At the $25-$50 price point, there is arguably no better cool-climate, terroir-driven red wine available to the American consumer today. Decanter The equation is simple: world-class scores, compelling story, unique terroir, and a price that makes weekly drinking possible. That is the combination that built the Malbec market in America twenty years ago. Cabernet Franc is poised to do it again — but with a more sophisticated audience. How to Buy Argentine Cabernet Franc in the US Argentine Cabernet Franc is more available in the US market than most consumers realize. Total Wine & More stocks the El Enemigo range nationally. Specialty retailers like K&L Wines, Saratoga Wine Exchange, and Wine.com carry a broader selection including the Gran Enemigo single-vineyard bottlings. When browsing, look for these labels on the bottle: Uco Valley (or Valle de Uco), Gualtallary, Paraje Altamira, and Los Chacayes. These are the appellations within the appellation — the specific subzones where the most compelling expressions originate. Any bottle that specifies one of these subzones is signaling serious intent. Vintages to seek out: 2021 has been particularly praised across all critical publications for its balance of structure and freshness. 2020 and 2019 are also excellent. The Bottom Line Malbec made Argentina famous.Cabernet Franc is making it respected. The shift is not about abandoning the grape that built the industry. It is about the natural evolution of a wine country as it matures — moving from varietal identity toward terroir expression, from reliable crowd-pleasing toward genuine artistic statement. What the Uco Valley's high-altitude vineyards have done with Cabernet Franc is remarkable: they have taken a grape that, in its native France, is almost always a supporting actor, and turned it into a lead. The result is a style of wine that is singular — herbal and mineral in a way that no other region on earth can replicate, structured but never heavy, complex but never intimidating. As one critic wrote of the 2021 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary, it "finds the solution to an apparent paradox — structure without weight — in a balanced combination of terroir and careful cellar work. It's almost utopian: a mountain wine with the structure and character of high-altitude vineyards, yet with the agility and freshness of an oceanic red." SaratogaWine.com Next time you're at a wine shop or scrolling through a list, look for the word Franc. Look for the Uco Valley. And look at the price tag — because right now, Argentina is offering one of the great bargains in the wine world, and the window is not going to stay open forever. The best time to discover Argentine Cabernet Franc was five years ago. The second best time is now.Cheers

Beyond Malbec: Why Argentina's Cabernet Franc Is the World's Next Obsession

While the world prepares for National Wine Day in the USA (May 25th) and International Chardonnay Day, the most discerning collectors and travelers are already looking south. May 2026 has quietly become a pivotal month for the global wine community — and Argentina is leading the conversation with far more than its legendary Malbec.
The Torrontés Moment: An Argentine Answer to World Moscato Day
Today, May 9th, the world raises a glass to World Moscato Day. But for those seeking something more complex — dry, intensely aromatic, and rooted in extreme altitude — Argentina's Torrontés deserves the spotlight. As the wine trade convenes at the London Wine Fair later this month to debate sustainability and terroir, Argentine high-altitude whites from Salta are already embodying both. Grown at elevations above 1,700 meters in the Calchaquí Valleys, Torrontés produces a profile that surprises even seasoned sommeliers: jasmine and peach on the nose, with a finish that is clean and mineral rather than sweet. It is the kind of wine that reframes a category. For US and Canadian readers looking to explore this style before May 25th, several of Salta's benchmark producers ship directly through Wine.com — a straightforward way to add something genuinely unexpected to your spring cellar.
From Concert Stages to Vineyards: The Rise of Wine Tourism in 2026
A quieter trend is reshaping how international travelers plan their South American itineraries. In 2026, major residencies and cultural circuits in Buenos Aires have become the gateway to something unexpected: a 90-minute flight west to Mendoza, where the Andes set the stage for a very different kind of experience.Whether arriving from the Okanagan Wine Festival in Canada or winding down a jazz circuit in California, travelers are discovering that Mendoza's rhythm — unhurried, vineyard-framed, and built around the table — is the ideal counterpoint to any packed itinerary.
Why Mendoza Is the Ultimate Retreat
The region's luxury wine hotels offer the kind of exclusivity that doesn't announce itself loudly. Private tastings among the vines, spa treatments built around grape-seed extracts, and rooms that open onto the Andes at sunrise — it is hospitality designed for people who have seen most things and still want to be surprised. Our curated selection of the best wine hotels in Mendoza covers the properties worth the detour.
National Wine Day (May 25th): The Case for Argentine Wine
The "Buy Premium" shift among American consumers is real and measurable. Increasingly, wine buyers are moving past familiar labels toward regions that offer authenticity and a transparent story from grape to glass. Argentine wine — with its combination of high-altitude viticulture, family-owned estates, and honest price-to-quality ratio — sits at the center of that shift. From Zuccardi's commitment to single-terroir expression to the decades of research behind Catena Zapata's Adrianna Vineyard, these are wines with something to say beyond the label.
Editor's Choice: Three Argentine Bottles for May
Three wines worth seeking before National Wine Day, each tied to a moment in this month's calendar:
Catena Zapata Adrianna Vineyard 'White Stones' Chardonnay
For International Chardonnay Day (May 21st). Beyond Malbec: Argentine Wine Trends for International Wine Month 2026

Close your eyes and imagine standing at 9,000 feet above sea level. The air is thin and electric. The Andean sun — savage, unfiltered — beats down on ancient soils that have never known rain for months at a time. At night, the temperature drops 30 degrees in a matter of hours. It sounds extreme because it is. And it's exactly why the wines grown here taste like nothing else on earth.Argentina's high-altitude vineyards are no longer a secret among sommeliers. They're fast becoming the obsession of a new generation of wine lovers — those who've mastered Napa, explored Burgundy, and are now asking: what's next? The answer, increasingly, is the Argentine Andes.
 When Altitude Changes Everything
Wine at elevation plays by different rules. The science is straightforward, but the results are nothing short of extraordinary. At heights between 3,000 and 10,000 feet, the intense UV radiation forces grape skins to thicken, producing wines with deeper color, more complex aromatics, and naturally higher polyphenols. More critically, the dramatic diurnal temperature shifts — scorching days followed by cold, clear nights — allow grapes to retain crisp natural acidity even as they ripen fully under the relentless Andean sun.The result? Wines that are vibrant, fresh, and structurally elegant. Not the heavy, extracted reds that defined a previous era of Malbec. These are wines with tension — wines that make you lean forward.
Valle de Uco: Where Luxury Meets the Volcano
An hour south of Mendoza city, the Valle de Uco sits in the shadow of the Tupungato volcano at elevations reaching 4,900 feet. This is ground zero for Argentina's fine wine revolution.Subzones like Gualtallary and Los Árboles have drawn investment from some of the world's most celebrated winemakers, including names from Bordeaux and Napa who recognized what the locals had known for decades: this terroir is world-class. The soils here — a complex mix of limestone, clay, and alluvial deposits from ancient glaciers — add a minerality to the wines that no amount of technique can replicate. The Malbec from Gualtallary doesn't just taste different from a valley-floor version. It tastes like a completely different grape: tighter, more aromatic, with a blue-fruit precision that lingers for minutes. The Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc grown here are drawing equally serious attention. And then there's the experience itself. Boutique wineries like Zuccardi Valle de Uco and Achaval Ferrer have built hospitality programs that rival anything in Napa or Tuscany — private tastings, chef's table lunches between the vine rows, and architectural winery spaces that frame the Andes like a living painting.
Cafayate: The World's Highest Wine Town
Travel 900 miles north to Salta province and you'll find Cafayate — a small colonial town surrounded by vineyards at 5,400 feet, making it one of the highest wine-producing regions on the planet. Here, the star is Torrontés: Argentina's signature white grape, producing wines of extraordinary aromatic intensity — think jasmine, white peach, and citrus zest — with a crisp, dry finish that defies its perfumed nose. It's one of the world's most distinctive white wines, and it's almost impossible to find outside Argentina. But Cafayate isn't just about wine. The landscape is otherworldly — rust-red rock formations, cacti, and the silence of the high desert. Staying in one of the region's boutique posadas, sipping Torrontés as the sun sets over the Calchaquí Valleys, is one of those travel experiences that becomes part of who you are.
This Is a Destination, Not Just a Glass
Here's what separates Argentina's high-altitude wine country from every other region worth visiting: the ratio of extraordinary experience to tourist crowds is still overwhelmingly in your favor.
